What Is A TFFA Scan?
Targeted Imaging for Foetal Anomalies, or TIFFA, is one of the most important scans done during pregnancy. Also known as the level II foetal anomaly scan, it helps detect congenital foetal abnormalities in the early stages. In addition, it helps check:
- Growth of the vital internal organs of the baby
- Foetal growth and movements
- Birth defects
- Amniotic fluid level
- Foetal chromosomal defects
- Position of the placenta
The TIFFA ultrasound scan is done during the second trimester of pregnancy, between the 18th and 23rd week. Most of your child’s vital organs would have developed by this time.
TIFFA Scan Advantages
The benefits of getting a TIFFA scan done at Aanvi Fertility and Women’s Centre include:
- Understanding the growth of a baby’s vital organs
- Early detection of problems
- Checking foetal movements
- Understanding the condition of the umbilical cord
- Locating the placenta’s position
- Detecting chromosomal abnormalities
- Checking the birth canal
- Early detection of foetal abnormalities
TIFFA Scan Procedure
For a TIFFA scan, you need to ensure that your bladder is full before the procedure. During the 18th to 23rd week of your pregnancy, the baby would be big enough to be seen when the scan is done.
Your tummy needs to be exposed to perform the scan. It is an external procedure, and the sonologist will maneuver the transducer over the surface of your belly.
As mentioned before, the TIFFA scan is no different from a regular scan. Your doctor will apply a cold gel on exposed part of your tummy and move the transducer across to obtain a clear view of your baby. During the procedure, the doctor would try to view the baby from different angles to gather maximum information.
During the TIFFA scan, the ultrasound waves are sent via the transducer to view the images of the organs and vital features on a computer screen.
The sonologist usually points out the baby’s body parts, such as the face, hands, etc., while doing a detailed analysis. During the scan, you will also be able to see the baby’s face.
The time needed to do the TIFFA scan is approximately 25 to 35 minutes. The procedure is not at all painful. However, you may feel a slight pressure on your belly when the scan is done.
