The Best Clinic for Nuchal Translucency Scan at Tilaknagar!

When it comes to pregnancy care in Tilaknagar, Hyderabad, Aanvi Fertility and Women’s Centre is your best choice. You can consult with Dr. Swarna, an experienced gynaecologist and obstetrician. She will give you the best advice. She is also a sonologist and a maternity care specialist.

The Nuchal Translucency (NT) test, an optional ultrasound scan done during the first trimester of pregnancy, helps determine the risk of your baby developing congenital conditions such as Down syndrome. When it comes to detecting conditions in combination with other first-trimester screenings (blood tests), the NT scan provides accurate results.

The NT test involves measuring the amount of fluid in the nuchal fold behind your baby’s neck. If there is more fluid, babies tend to develop genetic or chromosomal conditions or indicate the risk of developing conditions like Down syndrome, Patau syndrome, or Edward’s syndrome.

A higher NT value is also indicative of an increased risk of developing congenital heart conditions. During the NT ultrasound scan, screening for a few basic anatomical structures of the foetus is also done.

When Is NT Scan Done

At Aanvi Fertility and Women’s Centre, we perform an NT scan during the first trimester of your pregnancy between the 11th and the 13th week or when your baby measures 45 millimetres to 84 millimetres from its crown (top of the head) to rump (bottom of the torso).

After the 14th week of gestation, the body tends to reabsorb the fluid behind the neck of your baby. It becomes difficult to measure the same later on in pregnancy.

Nuchal Translucency Screening Procedure

Your doctor will use an abdominal ultrasound for the NT test. Your doctor will apply a gel to the surface of your stomach as the next step. Then, the doctor will move a handheld transducer over your stomach and view your baby’s images on a screen or monitor.

The next step is to measure the fluid-filled space behind the neck of your baby. Typically, the fluid area behind the neck of your baby is specified in millimetres.

The amount of fluid contained in the nuchal fold increases as the gestational age increases. The cut-off level at which additional testing is recommended (based on the NT test and gestational age) varies from one organization to another. In most cases, genetic counselling and additional testing are recommended if the NT reading is more than 3 millimetres.

There is no risk involved in NT screening. This screening alone detects approximately 70 percent of trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) cases. The results of a normal NT ultrasound and that of the first-trimester blood screenings are read together to increase the accuracy of predictions to nearly 95 percent.
